Malibells farm produces a small crop of organically grown Elephant/Russian Garlic annually.
The garlic has a mild, sweet flavour that is somewhere between garlic and onion.
Cloves are large, easy to peel and can be eaten raw, sliced into salads, cooked like any other garlic, or roasted whole.
It is high in vitamins A, C and E.
Plants that do not flower often form only one large, symmetrical clove known as a round, rather than a bulb.
Plants grown from rounds usually produce a large bulb with several cloves and a flower stalk.
Elephant garlic tends to alternate between the production of cloves and the production of “onions” and may go to seed only every second year.
Garlic “onions” can be used like a clove.
Garlic is also useful as an ornamental planted at the back of rose gardens to repel pests such as aphids.
Russian Garlic is available for guests at Malibells to purchase.
We are happy to give you a sample to try while staying in one of our cottages.
